The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has strongly condemned the mistreatment of Nigerian football players in Libya. During an appearance on a monitored program, Enoh stated that the Nigerian government is taking the matter seriously and will ensure a thorough investigation.
He confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Yusuf Tuggar, has summoned the Libyan Ambassador to address the situation. “The Nigerian government has not taken this issue lightly and will not stop until the matter is fully resolved,” Enoh said.
This response follows the ordeal faced by the Super Eagles, who were stranded for hours at a Libyan airport on Sunday with no access to food or the internet as they prepared for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights. It was only after diplomatic efforts and public outcry that the team was allowed to leave Libya.
Enoh also accused the Libyan Football Federation of intentionally subjecting the Nigerian players to poor treatment, dismissing claims that the Libyan team received bad treatment during their first match in Nigeria. "The Port Harcourt Airport, where they arrived, is one of our best airports. There was no reason for such mistreatment of our players. These allegations are fabrications meant to create false impressions," Enoh asserted.
