A shocking video circulating on social media shows a senior army officer, identified as a Major General, and two soldiers assaulting a man in Abuja for allegedly overtaking their vehicle.
The 1:57-minute clip captures the victim groaning in pain while pleading, “How did I pass your car? Oh my God!” Despite his cries, the soldiers continued the brutal assault. In the background, a woman is heard shouting, “He is not feeling fine! Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!”
The soldiers also turned on the woman, who attempted to record the incident on her phone. “Give me the phone! Give me the phone!” one of the soldiers demanded while attacking her.
The video has sparked widespread condemnation online, with reports emerging that the assaulted man plans to sue for N150 million in damages and demand the dismissal of the Major General involved.
Reacting to the incident, the Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered an immediate investigation. In a statement released by Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, the Nigerian Army pledged to uncover the facts behind the incident.
The statement read:
“The attention of the Nigerian Army (NA) has been drawn to a viral audio-visual recording circulating on social media platforms, purportedly showing a senior Army officer and two other soldiers in an altercation with a man and woman within the Abuja metropolis.
“The circumstances leading to this incident are not clear at the moment. However, the Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered an immediate investigation to unravel the true circumstances surrounding this altercation. The NA remains committed to serving and protecting all law-abiding Nigerians as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
The Army urged the public to remain patient and assured them that due diligence would be applied to reach a fair and logical conclusion.
This incident has reignited discussions about accountability and the treatment of civilians by security personnel, with many Nigerians demanding justice for the victims.
