October 3, 2024 Solanke Gets First England Call-Up In Seven Years

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke has been called up to Lee Carsley’s England squad for this month’s Nations League matches against Greece and Finland. This marks Solanke’s first national team selection since his only cap in 2017, when he appeared as a substitute against Brazil during his time at Liverpool.

Despite his strong start to the season, Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers has not been included in the squad. Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, Tottenham’s James Maddison, and Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze are also absent.

Kyle Walker has earned a recall after being left out of Carsley’s first squad, while Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham returns following an injury that kept him out of the September fixtures. Carsley’s interim tenure began with two Nations League wins against Finland and the Republic of Ireland last month.

The Three Lions will host Greece at Wembley on October 10 before traveling to Helsinki to face Finland on October 13.

Solanke has impressed since joining Tottenham from Bournemouth in a £65m deal over the summer, scoring three goals in six games. Despite his 21 goals in 42 appearances for Bournemouth last season, Solanke was not selected for England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Maguire, who was a regular under former manager Gareth Southgate, has been left out after making Carsley’s squad in September. The defender missed Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham with a calf injury but has returned to the squad for their Europa League match against Porto.

Morgan Rogers, 22, had been considered for a call-up following his excellent start to the season, where he has started all eight of Aston Villa’s Premier League and Champions League games, scoring twice.

James Maddison, who has netted once in seven matches for Spurs, continues to be left out of the squad after being omitted from Southgate’s preliminary Euro 2024 selection.
