Brymo, a Nigerian artist, has finally bowed to criticism and apologized to Igbos.
Thousands of Nigerians joined a petition to prevent the artist from receiving the All Africa Music Award, for which he was nominated in the 'Songwriter of the Year' category.
The artist was chastised for claiming that the Igbos are not prepared to produce a Nigerian president. He also advised the area to try out for the vice presidency before striving for the presidency.
Brymo, on the other hand, apologized to the Igbos on Twitter a few hours ago.
He asked them to pardon him for what seemed to be prejudiced rants against the Igbo ethnicity.
Brymo indicated that he did not want to hurt them, therefore his apologies.
“Forgive my assertions that came across as bigoted spewings against the Igbo tribe. I did not mean to harm anyone, I am sorry!!
He added, “My apologies are extended to all Igbos that may not know too. I missed that cos I am deeply affected most around once I’m closer to. Do accept my sorry, I did not mean harm”.
Brymo responds to charges of disparaging Igbos.
Brymo has already explained his 'bigoted' comment to the Igbos.
Brymo noted on his Instagram page that the entire saga began with Chimamanda Adichie earning a Chieftaincy title in her community but declining a national honor.
According to him, he has been a champion for the Igbo presidency in recent years and was just criticizing the Ndi Igbo movement, with which he is unhappy.
Brymo said that his statements were misinterpreted since he did not offend any tribe.
“It is very important you understand that this entire fracas began with me seeing in the media that Chimamanda Adichie refused some national honors and had picked up some traditional titles in the East at home.
I have clamored for the Igbo presidency in the last few years, you wouldn’t believe it.
Clarifying his statement, he said, “When I said ‘Fuck Ndi’Igbo to hell with it – the ‘it’ refers to the peddlers of the movement i.e people championing for it.
On insulting the tribe, Brymo said, ” I did not insult the tribe, I am sorry to anyone who it sounded as such too. I was trying to weigh into a very important matter”.
