Just two days after his altercation with a police officer, renowned Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti visited the Ikeja police command on Monday, May 15, 2023.
Accompanied by Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Seun Kuti turned himself in as a response to the viral video showing him assaulting a police officer in uniform on the Third Mainland Bridge.
In the video, Seun Kuti can be seen yelling at the officer, physically confronting him, and delivering a strike to his face. The Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, promptly ordered the arrest of the musician upon the release of the video.
"The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform. The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly," stated the official police announcement.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Command, confirmed Seun Kuti's visit and surrender.
The musician, accompanied by his lawyer and a family representative, willingly presented himself at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja and was subsequently placed under arrest.
Hundeyin further informed the public that Seun Kuti is currently being interrogated at the State CID Panti located in the Yaba area of Lagos.
