January 11, 2025 Senator Azuta-Mbata Elected as President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo

Senator John Azuta-Mbata has emerged as the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people.

His election follows the completion of Imo State’s tenure in leading the pan-Igbo group, previously headed by Fidelis Chukwu. This transition paved the way for Rivers State to produce Azuta-Mbata, who will now steer Ohanaeze for the next four years.

Shortly after his election, Azuta-Mbata was sworn in and pledged to prioritize unity and inclusive leadership. He expressed his commitment to fostering growth and harmony among the Igbo people, both within Nigeria and across the diaspora.

Governor Hope Uzodimma, chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, congratulated the newly elected President-General and assured the support of South-East governors in advancing regional development and economic integration under his leadership.

Born in January 1960, Senator Azuta-Mbata holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Ibadan. His political career began during Nigeria’s Fourth Republic in 1999, when he was elected Senator for the Rivers East constituency under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He served in the Senate until 2007 and was re-elected in 2023.
