March 12, 2024 Senate Suspends Ningi For Three Months Over Budget Padding Claims

Under the helm of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the Senate made a decisive move on Tuesday, suspending Senator Abdul Ningi amidst allegations of N3.7 trillion in budget padding for the year 2024. Representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Ningi faced a three-month suspension following a heated session in the red chamber.

The suspension motion was initially proposed by Jimoh Ibrahim, a member of the Senate's Appropriation Committee, who sought Ningi's suspension for 12 months due to allegations of criminal misinformation and disruption of peace within the National Assembly and the broader nation. However, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong of Cross River South Senatorial District, and Senator Abdulfatai Buhari of Oyo North, proposed amendments to reduce the suspension duration to six and three months, respectively.

Senate President Akpabio, deeming Ningi's actions as severe, conducted a voice vote, wherein a majority of lawmakers supported the three-month suspension for Ningi.
