Today, the Senate is set to review the qualifications of Yemi Cardoso, the current acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and four other candidates for the position of Deputy Governor of the bank.
Cardoso and the deputies will lead the CBN for the next five years if approved. The Senate, resuming after a two-month recess, also plans to evaluate two additional ministerial nominees proposed by President Bola Tinubu on October 3, 2023.
This update was issued in a statement by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate Leader's Media Office, on September 25, 2023.
The screening will include Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro, Mr Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Mr. Philip Ikeazor, and Dr. Bala M. Bello as deputy governors alongside Dr. Cardoso. Should Cardoso secure confirmation, he will succeed Godwin Emefiele, suspended in June amid investigations and financial sector reforms.
Notably, President Tinubu appointed Dr. Jamila Ibrahim and Mr. Ayodele Olawande as Minister of Youth and Minister of State for Youth, respectively, during the legislative break. In this interim period, Cardoso has taken on the role of CBN Governor until formal Senate confirmation
