March 13, 2025 Senate Passes Vote Of Confidence In Akpabio

The Senate has unanimously affirmed its trust in Senate President Godswill Akpabio through a vote of confidence. The motion, introduced by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) and supported by Deputy Minority Leader Olalere Oyewumi (Osun West), was passed during Thursday’s plenary session.

This development follows remarks made two days earlier by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), the suspended Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs. Speaking at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference in New York, she alleged that her six-month suspension without pay was retaliation for accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment. Reports indicate that Natasha has also initiated contempt proceedings against Akpabio and others regarding her suspension.

In response, the Senate called on Nigerians to disregard the allegations, noting that the issue is currently under judicial review. Referencing Order 40 of its standing rules, the Senate emphasized that it cannot intervene in a matter already before the courts.
