March 23, 2023 Referee Suspended in Egypt For Using a Fan’s Phone to Review Goal

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Mohamed Farouk, an Egyptian referee, has been suspended indefinitely by the country's FA for disallowing a goal in a recent match between Al-Nasr and Suez.

Farouk used an alternative system to review a late goal in the absence of VAR and, after watching footage on a spectator's phone, ruled the goal out for handball.

Despite protests from the away team, the decision stood, denying them an away point.

As a result of his actions, Farouk has been punished heavily, with the head of the Egyptian Referees Committee, Vitor Pereira, suspending the referee and his entire matchday staff for an indefinite period.

Pereira, who took over the role from former Premier League official Mark Clattenburg in March, made the decision to investigate the incident.

The Egyptian FA confirmed the committee's decision, stating that they would be investigating the use of a mobile phone by Farouk to review footage of the match's events.

The incident highlights the importance of proper use of technology in refereeing decisions and the need for clear guidelines on its use in the absence of VAR.
