The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed the death of two individuals following a suspected bomb explosion at Tsangagyar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School in Kuchibuyi Village, Byazhin area of Abuja.
The incident occurred on January 6, 2025, around 11 a.m., prompting a swift response from the police after receiving a distress call from the village head. A team of operatives, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit and the Kubwa Area Commander, was dispatched to the scene.
FCT Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Josephine Adeh, revealed that three men from Katsina, suspected to be handling an improvised explosive device (IED), visited the school’s owner, Mallam Adamu Ashimu. The device reportedly detonated on the school veranda, killing two of the men instantly. A third individual and a female trader nearby sustained severe injuries and were taken to an undisclosed hospital under police guard.
Adeh confirmed the recovery of IED remnants from the scene and noted that the school owner had been taken into custody for questioning.
John Gabaya, Chairman of Bwari Area Council, provided additional details, confirming one fatality at the scene and four injured individuals, including a young girl selling soybean cakes nearby. "The girl sustained injuries because of her proximity to the explosion and was rushed to the hospital along with three others," he said.
FCT Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or items. Residents are advised to stay alert, avoid contact with suspicious objects, and promptly notify the authorities in case of emergencies.
