Operatives of the Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos, have arrested a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Olawuyi, for allegedly obtaining a vehicle under false pretenses and stealing N30 million. The arrest was confirmed by the Zonal Public Relations Officer, SP Umma Ayuba, in a statement on Thursday.
According to Ayuba, the arrest followed a petition received from Adesuwa Ogizie, a US-based licensed car dealer. In 2016, Olawuyi contacted Ogizie to purchase a Mercedes Benz GLE 350 valued at N30 million. Olawuyi claimed that his brother, Jude Hanslem, would make the payment on his behalf. After the vehicle was delivered to Nigeria, Ogizie discovered that the money paid into her account was the proceeds of fraud.
A team of detectives from the Zonal Anti-Kidnapping Unit, led by SP Abass Gadzama (O/C ZAKU), apprehended the suspect. During interrogation, Olawuyi confessed to the crime, admitting that he was involved in internet fraud at the time and had sold the Mercedes Benz GLE 350, converting the proceeds for his own use.
Ayuba stated that the investigation is ongoing and that further findings will be communicated. The suspect will be prosecuted accordingly upon the completion of the investigation.
