Amaju Pinnick, a former president of the Nigeria Football Federation, narrowly missed out on re-election to the FIFA Council, falling short by a single vote at the Confederation of African Football General Assembly held in Cairo on Wednesday. Djibouti’s Souleiman Waberi claimed the final available seat with 29 votes, just ahead of Pinnick’s 28.
The election was topped by Morocco’s Fouzi Lekjaa, who garnered an impressive 49 votes. Egypt’s Hani Rida and Niger’s Djibrilla Hamidou each secured 35 votes, while Mauritania’s Ahmed Yahya joined Waberi with 29 votes to lock in their positions.
This result is a disappointment for Pinnick, who has been part of FIFA’s top decision-making body since 2021 and aimed to continue his tenure.
In the women’s category, Kanizat Ibrahim of Comoros emerged victorious with 30 votes, beating out Lydia Nsekera, who received 13 votes, and Isha Johansen, who earned 7 votes.
