The National Chairman-elect of the People's Democratic Party, Iyorchia Ayu, has said the planned increase in the price of premium motor spirit, popularly known as petrol, will pile more hardship on Nigerians as well as increase prices of foodstuff and crimes rate in the country.
Ayu said this in Abuja while responding to questions from reporters after releasing the communique issued at the end of the PDP's 2021 two-day national retreat.
He said Nigerians had already been pressed ahead of the planned increase of petroleum pump price because of too much hardship.
He stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government was trying to "take us into the highest level of suffering and ultimately, taking Nigerians to a position of non-existence".
Ayu said: "The PDP does not believe in visiting more hardship on the Nigerian people. The party has not discussed the issue of increase in petroleum prices but our general position is that the people of Nigeria are already hard pressed, there is so much hardship.
"If you're poor, you're not going to benefit from what is called petroleum subsidy."
