April 8, 2025 Pascal Dozie, Founder of the Late Diamond Bank, Passes Away at 84

Pascal Dozie, a towering figure in Nigerian business and the visionary behind the now-defunct Diamond Bank, as well as a former Chairman of MTN Nigeria, has died at the age of 84.

According to family sources, Dozie succumbed to a brief illness, leaving behind an indelible mark on Nigeria’s financial and telecommunications landscapes.

Born on April 9, 1939, into a devout Catholic family, Dozie was shaped by his upbringing under the guidance of his father, Charles Dozie, a catechist. His educational journey began at Our Lady’s School Emekuku, followed by Holy Ghost Juniorate Seminary and Holy Ghost College in Owerri, where he earned his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Determined to expand his horizons, Dozie pursued higher education in the United Kingdom. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the prestigious London School of Economics and later delved into Operational Research and Industrial Engineering. He capped his academic pursuits with a Master’s degree in Administrative Science from City University in London.

Dozie’s influence on Nigeria’s economy was transformative. As the founder of Diamond Bank, he steered it to prominence before its eventual merger with Access Bank. His tenure as Chairman of MTN Nigeria was equally impactful, guiding the telecom giant through a period of significant growth. His contributions earned him admiration and respect across the nation.

He is survived by his wife, Chinyere, and their five children. The family has yet to release details about funeral arrangements.

Dozie’s legacy as a pioneer in Nigeria’s banking and telecom sectors will endure for generations.
