Several sports journalists traveling through Anambra State to Uyo, Akwa Ibom, for an African Nations Cup qualifier match between the Super Eagles and Libya have been kidnapped. The incident occurred on Wednesday as the journalists, about 11 in number, were en route in a bus passing through Iseke, near the Ihiala area of Anambra.
By Thursday morning, reports emerged that nine of the journalists had been rescued, while one is feared dead. Four of the victims are still believed to be in captivity.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident. Speaking to reporters, the command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said that police were informed of the situation via social media and launched an immediate response.
“A joint operation is currently underway,” Ikenga stated, adding that they are working to determine whether the journalists remain in captivity or have managed to escape. He also noted that no official information about the rescue of any of the victims had been confirmed, but assured that efforts to free the abducted journalists are ongoing.
