Pelumi Olajengbesi, a prominent human rights lawyer based in Abuja, has called upon both the police authorities and the Lagos State Government to ensure a comprehensive and fair inquiry into the untimely demise of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad.
In a statement issued on Friday, Olajengbesi, from the Abuja-based law firm Law Corridor, emphasized the importance of not repeating past mistakes in investigations of similar incidents where justice was not served. He cited cases like the tragic deaths of Sylvester Oromoni Jr., a 12-year-old student at Dowen College in Lekki, and Karen-Happuch Akpagher, a 14-year-old student of Premiere Academy in Abuja.
Olajengbesi stated, "The cases of Sylvester, Karen-Happuch, and Mohbad highlight the urgent need to address the societal issues of bullying and cultism. Stronger penalties should deter any future occurrences of these reprehensible behaviours."
Regarding Mohbad's case, Olajengbesi urged the police and the Lagos State Government not to spare any individuals potentially involved in their investigation. He stressed the importance of a thorough and unbiased inquiry, ensuring that all culprits face the consequences, regardless of their status or connections.
He concluded, "Justice must prevail. Social misbehaviour flourishes when justice is absent, which threatens our nation."
