First up, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has written to the United Kingdom court that found former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice, and a doctor, Obinna Obeta, guilty of organ trafficking.
In June 2022, Ekweremadu and his wife were arrested and charged in court for allegedly bringing a child to the UK for organ harvesting. The senator has been remanded in custody since then, but his wife was granted bail in July.
In a letter dated April 3, 2023, and addressed to the chief clerk of central criminal court, Old Bailey, Obasanjo said though Ekweremadu’s action is “unpleasant and condemnable and can’t be tolerated in any sane or civilized society”, the court should temper justice with mercy for the sake of their sick daughter.
Ekweremadu is at risk of being sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in line with the Modern Slavery Act 2015 of the United Kingdom.
The letter further said the Ekweremadus have learnt from the distressing experience, and urged the court and the UK government to show clemency.
The former president also extolled the virtues, achievements, service and charitable deeds of the senator before his travails.
Reacting to this in an interview with inspiration FM, Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law, Nba-Spidel, Dr. Monday Ubani commended Obasanjo while saying that it is a noble act.
