Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has dismissed the corruption allegations against him as "fictitious and unsubstantiated."
During a welcome rally at his residence in GRA, Ikeja, on Saturday, Obasa expressed confidence in his integrity and claimed that due process was not followed in his removal. He alleged that the impeachment was orchestrated during his absence from the country, accusing the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of facilitating the process.
Obasa stated that security agents, led by the police commissioner, stormed the Assembly complex and his homes in Agege and Ikeja, locking his family indoors with over 200 officers present.
Refuting the allegations of misappropriation, Obasa ridiculed claims that a gate construction project cost ₦16 billion, quipping, “Is it the wall of Jericho?”
He added, “I am not afraid of being removed; after all, it’s not my father’s chieftaincy title. I represent my people, and they’ve returned me six times. If you want to act, act properly. Lagos is a special state, and we must uphold its standards.”
Obasa compared his situation to previous impeachments, such as that of former Speaker Jokotola Pelumi and former Deputy Speaker Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, highlighting that police intervention was never involved in those cases.
“I believe an innocent person should not be discredited without proof. If there are allegations, there must be evidence to show exactly what I have done,” he said.
He also thanked the members of the Governance Advisory Council and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for their support, describing the governor as a brother.
Obasa was impeached on January 13 by more than two-thirds of the 40-member Assembly over alleged misconduct and other offences. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was immediately elected as the new Speaker, becoming the first female to lead the legislative body in Lagos State.
