August 12, 2024 No Official Order to Implement ₦70,000 Minimum Wage for Corps Members – NYSC

The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has refuted the circulating reports claiming that corps members will be paid a ₦70,000 minimum wage. In a statement signed by Eddy Megwa, the Director of Information and Public Relations, the NYSC clarified that no directive has been received from the relevant government authorities to increase the corps members' allowance.

The statement urged corps members, their parents, and the public to disregard such misleading information, emphasizing that corps members are well aware of the official communication channels within the scheme. The NYSC also warned against falling prey to mischief-makers intent on spreading false information.

In 2020, the NYSC raised the allowance for corps members from ₦19,800 to ₦33,000 following the signing of a new minimum wage bill of ₦30,000. Recently, President Bola Tinubu signed a new minimum wage bill into law, raising the National Minimum Wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000. The NYSC, however, stressed that this development has not yet translated into an increase in the corps members' allowances.

The statement highlighted President Tinubu’s commitment to fulfilling his campaign promise of a living wage for Nigerian workers, underscoring the government's focus on people-centric governance.
