March 1, 2025 Nigerian Army Renames Ikeja Cantonment in Honour of Taoreed Lagbaja

The Nigerian Army has officially renamed the Ikeja Cantonment after the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Taoreed Lagbaja, in recognition of his outstanding service and contributions to the military.

Speaking at the renaming ceremony, officials highlighted Lagbaja’s over three decades of dedicated service, particularly in counterinsurgency, internal security, and peacekeeping operations. The initiative, they noted, underscores the importance of honouring national heroes and reassuring patriots that their sacrifices will always be remembered.

Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, also paid tribute to his predecessor, praising his remarkable infrastructural contributions while serving as Commander of the 9 Brigade. He emphasized that naming the cantonment after Lagbaja was a fitting way to immortalize his legacy.

Lagbaja served as Chief of Army Staff from June 19, 2023, until his passing on November 5, 2024, at the age of 56, following an illness. Appointed by President Bola Tinubu as the successor to Lieutenant-General Faruk Yahaya, he left behind a legacy of professionalism, dedication, and sacrifice during his 17-month tenure.
