The government of Niger State has announced the acquisition of a ₦500 billion loan for the construction of 1000 kilometers of roads throughout the state. Governor Umaru Bago shared this news during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Minna-Bida road, an 84-kilometer dual-carrier route connecting southern and northern Nigeria. This project aims to address longstanding economic challenges, particularly in Bida, known for its blacksmith craftsmanship and local economy hampered by inadequate road infrastructure.
Despite previous attempts by the former administration to initiate road construction, progress was limited, with only seven kilometers completed due to funding issues and unresolved compensation matters, leading to losses for commuters from accidents. Governor Bago expressed relief that the project is now moving forward, emphasizing that funding is secured for its realization.
The governor highlighted the potential impact of the road project, projecting the creation of 3 million job opportunities and ₦5 trillion GDP growth within the next year. President Bola Tinubu, represented by Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, affirmed the federal government's commitment to supporting state initiatives for national prosperity.
Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), commended the governor's agricultural efforts as a notable achievement. Governor Bago reiterated his commitment to completing the projects within 24 months.
