Nelson Mandela's Granddaughter, Anti-Apartheid Icon Zoleka Mandela, Passes Away at 43 After Brave Cancer Battle.
On Tuesday, the Mandela family announced the passing of Zoleka Mandela, a revered figure in the South African anti-apartheid struggle and granddaughter of the legendary Nelson Mandela. Zoleka, known for candidly chronicling her prolonged fight against cancer, was 43 years old at the time of her passing.
A family spokesperson revealed that Zoleka was admitted to the hospital on Monday as part of her ongoing treatment. "Zoleka passed away... surrounded by friends and family," shared Zwelabo Mandela.
Zoleka was the offspring of Mandela's youngest daughter, Zindzi Mandela, and her first husband, Zwelibanzi Hlongwane. Recent medical scans disclosed "significant" progress in her battle against cancer, which had affected her hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain, and spinal cord.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation paid tribute to Zoleka, referring to her as a cherished grandchild of Mum Winnie and Madiba, the affectionate name for the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
They acknowledged her tireless efforts in advocating for cancer prevention and her steadfast dedication to eradicating the disease's stigma, vowing her legacy to be a lasting inspiration for us all.
