Former Chelsea and Tottenham coach Antonio Conte was appointed by Napoli on Wednesday, as the dethroned Serie A champions aim to recover from a poor title defense.
“Welcome Antonio,” wrote club president and owner Aurelio De Laurentiis on X, formerly Twitter, sharing a photo of Conte signing his contract.
Conte, who has also coached Juventus and Inter Milan, has agreed to a three-year contract reportedly worth eight million euros ($8.7 million) per season.
He becomes the fifth Napoli coach in a year, following a turbulent period for the club. In the 2022-2023 season, Napoli celebrated their first Serie A title since 1990, the era of Diego Maradona. However, title-winning coach Luciano Spalletti departed last summer, and the club cycled through three managers, ultimately finishing a disappointing 10th this season.
Napoli ended the season 41 points behind new champions Inter, as Rudi Garcia, Walter Mazzarri, and Francesco Calzona failed to replicate Spalletti’s success. Spalletti is now managing the Italian national team.
Conte's task is to lead Napoli back up the league table. With a track record that includes four Serie A titles—three with Juventus and one with Inter in 2021—and a Premier League victory with Chelsea in 2017, fans have reason to be optimistic.
However, Conte will likely be without star striker Victor Osimhen, who is attracting interest from top European clubs. Despite this, Conte has reportedly insisted that Napoli retain key forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who is under contract until 2027, amidst interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
