September 17, 2024 Lagos Threatens To Demolish 280 Illegal Structures

The Lagos State Government has warned that it will demolish 280 illegal structures to prevent the development of slums, safeguard the state's master plan, and protect its coastal areas from erosion.

In a statement titled "LASG Serves Contravention Notice on Illegal Occupants of Mayegun Waterfront Scheme," issued by the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, it was revealed that notices have been sent to over 280 property owners and occupiers in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, located in Eti Osa Local Government Area.

The contravention notices give the occupants seven days to present proper documentation and approvals justifying their occupation. If they fail to comply, demolition notices will be issued. A technical assessment conducted by the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development found that these properties, including completed, under-construction, and undeveloped lands, lack government authorization.

Alebiosu urged the affected property owners to voluntarily remove their structures or regularize their documents before the notice expires to avoid penalties. He emphasized that illegal activities along the waterfront schemes must cease, as the state will no longer tolerate encroachment on government properties, land, and setbacks.

The Commissioner also disclosed that the state is currently addressing similar encroachment issues in the Okun Ajah Waterfront Scheme, reaffirming the government's commitment to protecting its waterfront schemes and infrastructure while ensuring the safety of life and property along Lagos' coastal areas.
