August 24, 2023 Lagos State Assembly Rejects 17 Commissioner-Nominees Over Indigene Concerns

The Lagos State House of Assembly has declined 17 of the 39 commissioner-nominees submitted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Notably, several rejected nominees had previously served as commissioners and special advisers during the governor's initial term.

Among the rejected nominees were Prof. Akin Abayomi (Health), Folashade Adefisayo (Education), Olalere Odusote (Energy), Gbenga Omotoso (Information and Strategy), Sam Egube (Economic Budget and Planning), Aramide Adeyoye (Works and Infrastructure), and Cecilia Dada (Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation).

Additionally, the lawmakers confirmed 22 other nominees, including former special adviser on education Tokunbo Wahab and Dolapo Fasawe, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency general manager.

In response, the Lagos State House of Assembly urged the confirmed nominees to prioritise serving the public's interests rather than individual agendas. The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa praised the thorough screening carried out by an ad-hoc committee led by Chief Whip Fatai Mojeed.

Meanwhile, the Epetedo Indigenes Association voiced their disappointment with the list and called Governor Sanwo-Olu to reevaluate his selection. The association's leaders criticised the imbalance in the nominee distribution and urged the state government and party leaders to ensure fairness and equity in the commissioner lineup.
