Erling Haaland scored both goals as Manchester City easily defeated West Ham 2-0 at the London Stadium to open the defense of their Premier League championship.
After a sluggish start in which the hosts were forced to switch goalkeepers due to an unfortunate injury to Lukasz Fabianski, City captain Gundogan took the lead with a sharp pass that found the deft run of former Borussia Dortmund striker Haaland, who was then upended by substitute 'keeper Alphonse Areola.
The Norwegian opened the score with a coolly executed penalty kick from 12 yards, and then he added his second of the day by latching onto Kevin De Bruyne's defense-splitting pass.
Haaland matches Sergio Aguero's accomplishment from August 2011 as the second striker to register twice on their City debut and the second debutant in Premier League history to win a penalty and successfully convert it.
