October 19, 2024 Gusau Pledges to Safeguard Nigeria’s Dignity Amid Libya Crisis

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, has pledged to do everything in his power to protect the dignity of Nigeria and ensure the safety of the players. His statement comes in response to the mistreatment faced by Nigeria’s senior men’s national team at the hands of Libyan authorities during their trip for the second leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group D match against the Mediterranean Knights.

Upon arrival in Libya on Sunday, the team was subjected to inhumane treatment. A video shared by the Super Eagles media team shows the players and officials stranded at the airport, with their luggage, while Libyan airport staff appeared indifferent to their situation and conversed in Arabic, ignoring their concerns.

The match was set to take place at the 10,000-capacity Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Benina, near Benghazi. However, the team’s plane was unexpectedly diverted to Al Abraq Airport, located over 200 kilometers away from their planned camp site, requiring a grueling three-and-a-half-hour drive to reach their destination.
