Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has signed the Lagos Electricity Bill into law, marking a significant step towards addressing power challenges in the state.

The signing ceremony, held at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, was attended by Deputy Governor Kadri Hamzat, members of the State House of Assembly, and the state’s executive council.

Governor Sanwo-Olu lauded the State House of Assembly for the expedited passage of the bill, emphasizing its potential to transform the socio-economic lives of Lagos residents. He noted that the bill had been in development for years, and its enactment assures Lagosians of a more reliable power supply.

State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, highlighted the law’s impact, stating it would provide an additional grid to Lagos State, eliminate blackouts, and establish a Host Community Development Trust Fund to empower communities to develop power plants.

“This law signifies progress and will ensure consistent power supply across the state,” Ogunleye remarked.

The Lagos State Electricity Law 2024 represents Governor Sanwo-Olu’s comprehensive approach to resolving longstanding energy sector issues. The law aims to:

  • Establish a technically sound and financially viable Lagos Electricity Market.
  • Ensure affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity access for all residents.
  • Promote diverse energy sources, including renewables, and encourage energy efficiency.
  • Foster investment, competition, and innovation within the electricity sector.
  • Electrify underserved areas to support the state’s sustainable development.

This landmark legislation lays the foundation for economic growth, industrial development, and environmental sustainability, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for Lagosians.
