Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has taken decisive action following a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of two lives and left 23 others injured at the state university on Friday.
The university had received relief supplies from the state government to aid students amidst economic challenges. However, a chaotic situation unfolded as some students overwhelmed the available security, triggering a stampede during which lives were lost and injuries sustained as students attempted to obtain the distributed food items.
Expressing profound sorrow over the loss of young lives, Governor Sule emphasized, "I pray their souls rest in peace. Our thoughts and condolences go to their families and friends at this moment of grief. The untimely loss of these young individuals under such circumstances is deeply painful."
In response to the tragedy, the governor swiftly directed both the authorities of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and security agencies to launch an immediate investigation to ascertain the circumstances and individuals responsible for the incident.
State Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe also visited the university to gather firsthand information and assess the condition of those injured in the unfortunate event.
The governor's office highlighted the successful distribution of relief supplies, including rice, and financial assistance of N5,000 to students across various tertiary institutions in the state, which was executed smoothly in several institutions.
Amidst the tragedy, Governor Sule reassured the public of the government's commitment to continuing the distribution of relief materials to alleviate the hardships faced by students and residents of the state. He called for calm, asserting that the government, under his leadership, remains focused on its mandate despite challenges.
