In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Shuaib Belgore, on Friday, April 28, 2023, the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, declared Monday, May 1, as a public holiday in celebration of Workers Day.
Aregbesola lauded the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices made by Nigerian workers and expressed his admiration for their contributions to the country's greatness and global reputation.
The Minister emphasized the pivotal role played by workers in Nigeria's development and success, emphasizing their immense contributions to the nation's growth and progress.
In his view, the dedication and diligence exhibited by workers across various sectors have contributed significantly to the country's status and esteem on the world stage.
Therefore, the government recognizes the importance of commemorating their contributions to the nation's well-being by observing a public holiday in their honor.
"There is dignity in labor," he stated, emphasising the importance of dedication and commitment to work for the development of the nation.
"We recognise the invaluable contributions of workers to the socio-economic development of our great country, Nigeria," Aregbesola added. "Workers have shown resilience, commitment, and dedication in the face of the numerous challenges that confront the nation."
The announcement comes barely a week after the Eid-el-Fitr holidays were observed across the country; and about 2 weeks after Easter Monday.
