May 28, 2024 Fetus Keyamo Suspends Nigeria Air Indefinitely

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced that the Nigeria Air project remains "indefinitely" suspended. Keyamo made this statement while highlighting the aviation sector's achievements during the 3rd ministerial updates on Monday in Abuja. He also mentioned plans to resume cargo flights between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.

In January, Keyamo disclosed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had begun investigating the controversial Nigeria Air deal made during the tenure of former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika. He stated, "There is a criminal investigation going on. I have called for the report."

Shortly after being sworn in as minister last August, Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), criticized Sirika's deal and suspended the entire arrangement, which was hastily unveiled just days before the end of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari's administration, to allow for a proper audit of the contracts.

The controversy surrounding the establishment of Nigeria’s national carrier, Nigeria Air, led to veteran aviator Girma Wake resigning as Chairman of Ethiopian Airlines. The interim Managing Director of Nigeria Air, Capt Dapo Olumide, clarified that the aircraft used for the unveiling of the national carrier was a legitimately chartered flight from Ethiopian Airlines and was returned to them after the unveiling on the last day of Buhari's administration in May 2023.

Both the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Aviation labeled the launch of Nigeria Air as fraudulent.
