December 31, 2024 Federal Government Launches CNG Buses for Airport Shuttle Services

The Federal Government has initiated the deployment of locally assembled compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, produced by Lanre Shittu Motors, for airport shuttle services.

The first batch of these eco-friendly buses was received at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos by officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), led by its Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku. The unveiling ceremony was attended by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Management, Festus Keyamo.

During the event, Keyamo emphasized that the deployment aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to reduce carbon emissions and advance Nigeria’s commitment to global climate goals. “What you see here today is a fleet of CNG buses for FAAN to commence passenger movement at all our airports immediately,” the minister stated.

The CNG-powered buses, designed for zero emissions, are equipped with accessibility features for persons with disabilities. Keyamo highlighted that this initiative supports the President’s broader objective of decreasing dependence on traditional fossil fuels like petrol and diesel while promoting sustainable alternatives such as CNG.

The introduction of CNG buses also aims to mitigate the effects of fuel subsidy removal on the public. Taiwo Shittu, Managing Director of Lanre Shittu Motors, explained that the buses are available in two configurations: a 31-seater model for airport shuttles and a 54-seater model for mass transit within cities.

Each bus is outfitted with modern conveniences, including air conditioning, viewing screens, and charging stations, ensuring a comfortable and efficient transportation experience. Shittu added that Lanre Shittu Motors intends to extend these sustainable transportation solutions beyond Lagos to other regions of the country.

This initiative marks a significant step toward eco-friendly mobility in Nigeria, reflecting the Federal Government’s commitment to sustainable development and improved public transportation.
