August 15, 2023 Federal Government Aims to Drop Firearms Possession Charge Against Emefiele

The federal government is withdrawing the illegal firearms possession charge filed against Godwin Emefiele, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) suspended governor. The decision was presented on Tuesday during an oral application at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Abubakar Mohammed, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the Federal Ministry of Justice, informed Judge Nicholas Oweibo that the withdrawal request was based on the outcome of further government investigations.

Afterwards, Mohammed disclosed to reporters that additional charges and counts might be forthcoming against the suspended bank chief due to the ongoing investigations.

On July 25th, Emefiele was formally charged with two counts related to the "illegal possession" of firearms and live ammunition. He was subsequently granted bail amounting to N20 million. Nonetheless, he was promptly rearrested by the State Security Service (SSS) right after leaving the courtroom, disregarding a court order to detain him at the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS).

The rearrest led to a dispute between the two federal agencies, culminating in a physical altercation. More information will follow as the situation develops.
