February 27, 2025 FCCPC Directs MultiChoice to Halt Price Increase Pending Investigation

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has directed MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, to suspend its planned subscription price increase until an ongoing investigation into the proposed adjustment is concluded.

The directive was issued in a statement on Thursday by the FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu.

MultiChoice had earlier been summoned to appear before the commission on February 27 for an investigative hearing regarding concerns over its repeated price hikes. However, after the company requested an extension, the hearing was rescheduled for March 6, 2025. The commission has mandated that MultiChoice’s CEO and other relevant officers attend the session with a detailed response to the inquiry.

“As part of this directive, MultiChoice is expressly instructed to maintain the existing price structure as of February 27, 2025, pending the commission’s review and final determination on the matter,” the statement read.

The FCCPC emphasised that freezing the prices is necessary to prevent potential consumer exploitation during the investigation.

Earlier in the week, MultiChoice had informed its customers of an impending price adjustment, citing the need to sustain its content offerings. According to the proposed changes, the DStv Compact package was set for an increase, while the Compact Plus and Premium bouquets would remain at N30,000 and N44,500, respectively.

The commission assured the public that updates on the investigation would be provided as it progresses.
