September 25, 2024 Fans Urge Dangote to Invest in NPFL Instead of Arsenal

Football fans have taken to social media, urging Aliko Dangote, President and CEO of Dangote Group, to invest in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). This follows Dangote's recent expression of regret over not purchasing Arsenal, an English Premier League club, when it was valued at $2 billion.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg’s Francine Lacqua in New York, Dangote explained that he chose to prioritize completing his refinery project in Nigeria over buying Arsenal. Reflecting on the decision, Dangote said, “I regret not buying it before, but my money was more needed for the refinery project than buying Arsenal. It was either I finish my project or buy Arsenal.”

The viral interview sparked a wave of reactions, with Nigerian football enthusiasts calling on Dangote to redirect his investment toward developing local football. Many suggested that his involvement could significantly improve the NPFL.

Owochejo Francis commented, “Why not establish a football club in Nigeria to create jobs and promote the local league? As Africa's richest man, your involvement could inspire others to invest in local football.”

Arong Usang urged, “Buy and sponsor Nigerian teams. The money spent on English players could easily support our local league. Follow in the footsteps of Ifeanyi Ubah—football isn’t limited to the English Premier League.”

Others suggested Dangote could take even bigger steps. Adeniyi Adeleke proposed, “Why not invest in the Nigerian football league by owning a team, building a stadium, and more?”

Several users mentioned specific clubs. Adeiza Valentine wrote, “Kano Pillars are available—it’s not too late to buy a local football club.” Johnbosco Nazic added, “Buy a club in the Nigerian league and transform it into a competitive force in Africa.”

Nze Chimereze echoed this sentiment, suggesting Dangote support teams like Kano Pillars, Rangers of Enugu, and Kaduna Warriors to help talented African players showcase their abilities. Kachi Phils added, “You’re looking to buy a foreign team, while local teams just need financing and polishing.”

Isa Oladele called on Dangote to follow the example of the late Moshood Abiola by owning a club in Nigeria. Aluko01 tweeted, “If you love football and Nigeria, invest in the NPFL—it will give the league a much-needed boost.”
