European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has reaffirmed support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasizing the legitimacy of his leadership.
Zelensky, who was democratically elected, faced criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who labeled him a “dictator” for not holding elections. However, EU officials clarified that Ukrainian law prohibits presidential elections during martial law, which has been in effect since Russia’s invasion. They also noted that many national constitutions include similar wartime provisions.
Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas also weighed in, countering Trump’s remarks by pointing out Russia’s long history of undemocratic elections, stating that the country has not held a truly free election in 25 years.
