March 9, 2022 English Premier League Terminates Broadcast Deal With Russia Over Ukraine Invasion

The English Premier League has made the decision to annul its broadcast deal with Russia following the country’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

The move will take effect immediately, which would mean Thursday’s four games will not be shown in the Eurasian country.

The final verdict took only 15 minutes of a four-hour meeting by all 20 clubs in London on Tuesday to agree to end the deal.

“We call for peace and our thoughts are with all those impacted,” the Premier League said in a released statement.

The Apex English League also said via the aforementioned statement it will donate £1m to support the people of Ukraine.

“The £1m donation will be made to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to deliver humanitarian aid directly to those in need.”

The TV rights for the Premier League were owned by the Rambler Group. The company was in its final year of a three-year deal to show matches in Russia.

In a separate move, the English Football Association has also suspended its viewership deal with Russia.

The consequence of the decision means none of this month’s FA Cup quarter-final fixtures will be broadcast.

The Premier League also openly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and that its clubs unanimously agreed on the move.
