Darwin Nunez scored twice in 13 minutes to cap an incredible comeback and give Liverpool a late 2-1 win at Newcastle United, extending their unbeaten start to the season in the Premier League.
Newcastle dominated after Anthony Gordon’s 25th-minute goal, which capitalized on a mistake by Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the dismissal of Reds center-back Virgil van Dijk in the 28th minute for fouling Alexander Isak as the last defender.
Visiting goalkeeper Alisson made a spectacular save to turn Miguel Almiron’s thunderous shot against the woodwork shortly after the hosts took the lead, and the Paraguay attacker also hit a post in the second half as Liverpool went 53 minutes without a shot on target after Van Dijk’s departure.
With nine minutes remaining, Nunez, who had come in four minutes earlier, picked up a deflection off Sven Botman, surged inside the penalty box, and hammered a furious, accurate low shot past Nick Pope and in off a post.
Substitute Eddie Howe’s side were denied penalties by VAR checks when Alexander Isak was pulled down and Andrew Robertson blocked a shot with his back during the second half after Sean Longstaff’s backheel could have restored Newcastle’s advantage.
Liverpool return to play next Sunday, when they host Aston Villa, who won at Burnley earlier in the day to make it two wins in a row after losing at Newcastle.
Newcastle United will look to bounce back from their second defeat of the season when they go to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
