February 19, 2024 Court Strikes Out Treasonable Felony Charge Against Sowore

On Monday, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja made a significant ruling by striking out charges of treasonable felony against Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow protest brought by the Federal Government.

The decision followed the Federal Government's submission, made through the Attorney General's office last week, to discontinue the case. The notice cited legal provisions empowering the Attorney General to take such action.

During the ruling, Justice Nwite emphasized the necessity of striking out the charges since the case was essentially commencing anew under his jurisdiction. Consequently, he formally dismissed the charges against Sowore.

Additionally, the court directed the Department of State Services (DSS) to return three phones, Sowore's passport, and the sum of N10,000 that had been seized from him, along with a phone belonging to the second defendant.

This development stems from Sowore and his co-defendant Olawale Bakare's arraignment in 2019 following a protest rally in Abuja under the banner of "Revolution Now."
