Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has reinstated Philip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State, months after his impeachment by the state assembly. In the Wednesday judgment, Justice Omotosho declared the impeachment illegal and unconstitutional, citing gross violations of the Constitution.
In addition to restoring Shaibu, the court ordered that his salaries and allowances be paid from April, when he was impeached. The court also directed Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to reinstate Shaibu's security details.

Meanwhile, the Edo State House of Assembly has appealed the High Court's judgment and filed a motion for a stay of execution pending the appeal. This decision came about three months after the lawmakers impeached Shaibu, following investigations that found him guilty of disclosing government secrets, in a move seen as the culmination of a prolonged conflict between him and Governor Godwin Obaseki.
