Justice Obiora Egwatu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has adjourned the case filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, to March 25, 2025.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had approached the court seeking an order to restrain the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges from investigating her. Last week, the court granted her request, but despite this, the Senate went ahead to suspend her for six months on Thursday after reviewing the committee’s report.
During Monday’s proceedings, the legal representatives of the first, second, and third defendants informed the court that they had not yet been served with the necessary documents. However, the senator’s counsel, Michael Numa (SAN), argued that all parties had been duly served, presenting affidavits of service as evidence.
After reviewing the documents, Justice Egwatu confirmed that all defendants had received the necessary court processes. Following this, the counsel for the third defendant, Senate President Godswill Akpabio—represented by Kehinde Ogunwumiju—requested an adjournment to allow all legal documents to be harmonized. Other defense counsels supported the request, stating that it would ensure a smoother and more efficient hearing at the next court date.
In his ruling, Justice Egwatu granted the adjournment to March 25, 2025, and directed that all relevant legal processes be properly served before the next hearing.
Speaking after the proceedings, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Peter Nwaebonyi, emphasized the importance of legal procedures, noting that proper service of documents allows all parties to study the case and respond appropriately. He also remarked that it was unusual for the court to interfere in the Senate’s internal affairs, but the upper chamber remained committed to respecting legal processes as a responsible institution.
