Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday granted bail to 10 #EndBadGovernance protesters who had been arrested and charged with treason, among other offenses. Each defendant was granted bail in the sum of N10 million, with one surety in the same amount.
While delivering the ruling, Justice Nwite emphasized that Nigeria’s criminal justice system operates under specific guidelines for both the prosecution and defense. He agreed with the argument made by the counsel for the 1st, 2nd, and 4th defendants, Abubakar Marshall, that “anyone charged with a criminal offense is presumed innocent until proven guilty.”
In light of this principle, Justice Nwite granted the bail application for all ten defendants. He stated, “I have carefully considered the submissions from both sides. I hereby grant the defendants bail, notwithstanding the charges against them.”
The judge specified that the bail was set at N10 million for each defendant, along with one surety of the same amount.
