A heart-wrenching incident occurred at the Dunamis Church in Mission Ward North Bank, Makurdi, the capital of Benue State.
On Monday, tragedy struck as the church building collapsed, leading to the reported demise of the pastor.
An eyewitness shared the distressing account, revealing that four individuals in prayer with the pastor also suffered injuries of varying degrees as the building caved in around them. The witness, Nath, described the frantic efforts to rescue the victims. "As soon as we heard the collapse of the building, we rushed to the place in an attempt to rescue them. It took some minutes before we could rescue the victims.
Meanwhile, four people were injured, and one person we later understand to be the pastor was found dead," Nath recounted.
Bartholomew Onyeka, the Commissioner of Police in the state, confirmed the incident to journalists on Tuesday. He explained, "Something like that happened, just one person di; justed in the process. When debris falls on people like that, the immediate reaction is what happens to the victims. So, people who rushed there were able to rescue four people; unfortunately, one person died. The injured persons are responding to treatment in a hospital where they were taken."
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures in construction and the need for vigilant maintenance of buildings to prevent such devastating accidents.
