Nigerian singer Chike recently made headlines by gifting ₦1 million to a critic who claimed that his success was solely due to his late collaborator, Mohbad. The exchange took place on X (formerly Twitter) after Chike shared a snippet of an unreleased song on Tuesday.
The critic, Daniel Omowonuola Lawal (@Hateofx), suggested that Chike owed his fame to Mohbad, tweeting, "Mohbad made you." In response, Chike subtly questioned Lawal’s own achievements, implying that the critic might struggle to succeed on his own. Chike replied, "Your mother made you, but I hope you find someone to MAKE you, coz I don’t see you doing it yourself. Jesus stays king (black love emoji)."
Lawal fired back, asserting that Mohbad was crucial to Chike’s success, including his streaming numbers. Chike then took a more direct approach, taunting Lawal and mentioning a potential gift of ₦1 million. He wrote, "Now I doubt your mother even made you right. If she didn’t teach you manners, she should have taught you research. I for send you like 1M now, make hunger comot your eye make you see road, but your account fit collapse. Let the good guy rest in peace."
Following this exchange, Lawal shared his account details, and Chike followed through by transferring the ₦1 million. Chike posted a receipt of the transaction on X, captioning it: "Hungry boy, go and eat."
Chike started his music career in 2015 after participating in Project Fame and later became the first runner-up on The Voice of Nigeria in 2016. He is currently signed to Brothers Records and released “Egwu,” a chart-topping track featuring Mohbad, in December of last year.
