Chelsea Football Club has made a significant signing by acquiring France striker Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig for a reported fee of £52 million.
The 25-year-old had an impressive season in the Bundesliga, scoring 16 goals in 25 games.
Nkunku's arrival marks the first signing for Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino since he took charge in May. Expressing his delight at joining the club, Nkunku stated, "I am incredibly happy to be joining Chelsea.
A considerable effort was made to bring me here, and I am excited about this new challenge. It will be an honor to wear the Chelsea shirt."
Having previously played in Ligue 1 with Paris St-Germain and the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, Nkunku now sets his sights on showcasing his skills in the Premier League, widely regarded as one of the most competitive leagues in the world. He looks forward to meeting his new coach, teammates, and supporters and leaving a lasting impression on the Chelsea faithful.
Starting his Chelsea contract on July 1st, Nkunku brings a wealth of experience, having won three Ligue 1 titles and two French Cups during his four-year stint at Paris St-Germain before joining Leipzig in 2019.
In the 2021-22 season, he was recognized as the Bundesliga Player of the Season and the German PFA Player of the Season, courtesy of his impressive tally of 20 goals and 15 assists in the league.
Nkunku recently demonstrated his prowess in the German Cup final, finding the net as Leipzig secured their second consecutive victory in the competition. Leipzig finished third in the Bundesliga last season.
Although Nkunku made his debut for the French national team last year, he missed out on the World Cup due to a leg injury.
Chelsea's co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, expressed their enthusiasm about the signing, highlighting Nkunku's exceptional attacking abilities and the value he will bring to the squad. They believe he will contribute quality, creativity, and versatility to the team.
With Nkunku's arrival, Chelsea aims to bolster their attacking options and continue their pursuit of success in both domestic and international competitions.
Very impressive indeed and valuable addition to the club.
