CBN Imposes ₦150m Fine on Nine Banks Over ATM Cash Shortage

In a decisive move to uphold cash flow stability, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has imposed penalties on nine Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) for failing to provide adequate Naira notes through automated teller machines (ATMs) during the Yuletide season.

Each of the affected banks has been fined ₦150 million for breaching the CBN’s cash distribution guidelines. This enforcement action came after spot checks conducted on their branches revealed non-compliance.

The CBN’s stringent action underscores its repeated warnings to financial institutions about the need to ensure seamless cash availability, especially during periods of high demand. The banks penalized include Fidelity Bank Plc, First Bank Plc, Keystone Bank Plc, Union Bank Plc, Globus Bank Plc, Providus Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, and Sterling Bank Plc.

In an official communication, the CBN confirmed that the fines would be debited directly from the respective banks' accounts with the apex bank. Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi Ali, emphasized the importance of maintaining cash flow to foster public trust and economic stability.

“Ensuring seamless cash flow is paramount to maintaining public trust and economic stability. The CBN will not hesitate to impose further sanctions on any institution found violating its cash circulation guidelines,” she stated.

The apex bank’s investigations and monitoring efforts remain ongoing, with a focus on identifying instances of cash hoarding and rationing at bank branches and among Point-of-Sale (POS) operators. To combat illegal cash sales and operational violations, including exceeding POS operators’ daily cumulative withdrawal limit of ₦1.2 million, the CBN is collaborating with security agencies.

Governor Olayemi Cardoso reiterated the bank’s commitment to ensuring efficient cash distribution during his address at the Annual Bankers’ Dinner of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in November 2024. He warned financial institutions to strictly adhere to the CBN’s cash distribution policies or face severe penalties.

“Our focus remains on fostering trust, ensuring stability, and guaranteeing seamless cash circulation across the financial system,” Cardoso stated, emphasizing the CBN’s resolve to maintain a robust cash buffer to meet Nigerians’ needs.

The CBN has called on all financial institutions to strictly comply with its guidelines, warning that further violations would prompt swift and decisive actions to protect economic stability and public confidence.

Guardiola, wife part ways after 30 years of marriage

After thirty years of marriage, Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, and his wife, Cristina Serra, have called it quits.

The divorce is “totally cordial, stable, and friendly,” according to a report published by SPORT on Monday.

According to the story, Guardiola and Cristina fell apart after at least five years of working abroad.

The couple married in 2014, close to Barcelona, after meeting in 1994.
Together, they have three children: Valentina, 17, Marius, 22, and Maria, 24.

It is said that while Guardiola remains in Manchester, Serra and Valentina, one of their three kids, have been residing in Barcelona full-time.

According to the article, they decided to dissolve their marriage in December, and at first, only those close to them knew about it.

Family members and friends have also been cautioned against disclosing any additional details on the divorce.

In 2019, Serra left Manchester to work for her family’s fashion business, Serra Claret.

Although it was thought that Guardiola would depart the team at the end of his previous term, he signed a new two-year contract with the Premier League champions in November that would last until 2027.

Chelle eyes 2026 W’Cup, signs two-year Eagles deal

As he assumes leadership of the three-time African champions, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has stated his goal to guide Nigeria to the “pinnacle of world football,” beginning with a trip to the 2026 World Cup, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

One week after being named the 37th coach of the Super Eagles, Chelle was unveiled by the Nigeria Football Federation on Monday during a short ceremony held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

He was given a two-year contract that might be extended if he wins a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Since his appointment last week, the NFF has constantly hammered the coach’s task of leading Nigeria to the tournament which will be played in the USA, Canada and Mexico despite the precarious situation of the Eagles in the qualifying series.

Nigeria has only three points after four rounds of the series, having only drawn three and lost one, placing them seventh in Group C.

The Eagles need to win all six of their remaining group games or perhaps hope for favorable outcomes in other matches in order to avoid the risk of missing out on a consecutive FIFA World Cup, a task Chelle faced before his unveiling.

The former Mali coach responded, “If you want to be a great coach, you need to take some risks, you need to make some sacrifices,” when asked if he would accept responsibility at the conclusion of the qualifying campaign.

“I want to be in the history. The first thing, I need to talk to the players. I will be a big brother. It is my prayer that we are going to the World Cup.

“I want to thank my agent, the NFF, the NSC and indeed all Nigerians for this big opportunity. Coaching the Super Eagles of Nigeria is an amazing job; I do not take this appointment for granted. I am elated and will do my utmost best.”

His aggressive and entrepreneurial style with the Mali national team at the AFCON, which he emphasized he will bring to Nigeria, served as the focal point for the majority of the responses that have followed his appointment.

Since the purpose of football is to score goals, I prefer an attacking approach. I will sit down and work hard with assistance to get the Super Eagles into the 2026 FIFA World Cup because I am aware of what Nigerians demand.

The 47-year-old, who grew up cheering for the Nigerian national team, also enjoyed his lifelong ambition of joining the Super Eagles.

“The Nigerian squad is not only a team. This was my favorite team when I was younger. I had a shirt, and I watched every World Cup match in France. It was my team, and I was in Marseille.

“I am already working diligently right now. My objective is very clear: to return the Super Eagles to their rightful place at the top of the world football rankings. Hard work, self-control, and a realistic yet ambitious plan are necessary for this. In a social media post, the coach said, “I will rely on the exceptional talent of our players, whether they play at home or abroad, and build a team that reflects the unity, strength, and excellence of Nigeria.”

Chelle left his position at top Algerian team MC Oran, 1989 African Champions’ Cup finalists, to join the Super Eagles. He brought Mali’s Aiglons within striking distance of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

FG urges bold reform, smarter investments for economic growth

To address the current state of the economy, the federal government has called for bold reforms and more intelligent investments.

This call was given by Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, at the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Governors’ Retreat in Al-Madinah, Saudi Arabia.

Mohammed Manga, the ministry’s director of information and public relations, said in a press statement on Monday that the minister emphasized the necessity for the IsDB to reconsider its approach to development funding in view of the current economic difficulties.

He urged the bank to concentrate on investments with high returns in order to provide sustainable funding, and he called for revolutionary, high-impact initiatives in the fields of energy, train, agriculture, and infrastructure.

“Edun also highlighted the importance of innovative funding solutions tailored to national priorities and debt dynamics, stressing the urgent need for a concessional financing strategy that balances development goals with minimal debt accumulation,” the statement read.

Edun’s support of creative finance, audacious reforms, and strict oversight as the IsDB launches its new 10-year plan highlights Nigeria’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and revolutionary transformation in the area.

“Achieving this vision and building a better future for future generations will require the IsDB and its member states to work together,” the statement said.
