FG Approves ₦4bn Cash Transfer for Vulnerable Households

The federal government has approved a N4 billion allocation for conditional cash transfers aimed at assisting vulnerable households across Nigeria.

At the launch of the 2025 Nigeria Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) at the United Nations House in Abuja on Thursday, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Professor Nentawe Yilwada, announced the initiative designed to tackle Nigeria’s growing humanitarian challenges.

The program will benefit at least 10 million displaced households, with a special focus on the most vulnerable members of society. The cash transfers are set to begin in February and will run through April, specifically targeting families affected by displacement in the Northeast.

"We are prioritizing women, especially widows, pregnant women, and those with disabilities," Yilwada said. "The challenges faced by displaced women, particularly those dealing with pregnancy or disabilities, are tough, and we are dedicated to offering support to those who need it most."

Along with the cash transfer initiative, the government has approved N2 billion for interest-free loans to farmers in rural areas to boost food production and self-sufficiency. Yilwada stated that loans ranging from N300,000 to N400,000 per household will be offered to rural farmers to help them access essential resources and link them to market opportunities.

Furthermore, a N4 billion provision has been made to support vulnerable groups affected by natural disasters and crises. These initiatives are part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce poverty and provide aid to those in dire need.

Yilwada reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and other affected communities across the nation. He explained that the HNRP was developed through extensive consultations and focuses on the humanitarian needs of conflict-affected areas such as Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe.

“We are combining efforts across humanitarian, developmental, and peacebuilding platforms to ensure long-term resilience and sustainable solutions for these communities,” Yilwada concluded.

Appeal Court Confirms Adedoyin’s Death Sentence for Murder of OAU Student

The Court of Appeal in Akure, Ondo State, has upheld the death sentence of Ramon Adedoyin, a well-known businessman and hotelier, for his role in the murder of Timothy Adegoke, a former postgraduate student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Delivering its judgment on Thursday, the appellate court affirmed the earlier ruling of the Osun State High Court, which sentenced Adedoyin to death.

"The judgment of the High Court of Osun State stands. Adedoyin's appeal is dismissed in part," the court declared.

However, the Court of Appeal overturned some elements of the lower court's orders, including the forfeiture of the Hilton Hotel and the directive requiring Adedoyin to fund the education of Adegoke's children. The court ruled that such penalties were beyond its jurisdiction, as they fell outside statutory provisions.

Adegoke's death, reported in November 2021, followed his disappearance after checking into the Hilton Honours Hotel in Ile-Ife, Osun State. Adegoke, who had traveled from Abuja for an examination at a distance learning center in Moro, Osun State, was found dead days after being reported missing.

The investigation into his death implicated Adedoyin and others, leading to their conviction for conspiracy and murder in May 2023. The Osun State High Court subsequently sentenced Adedoyin and the co-defendants to death.

Real Madrid Hits Billion-Euro Revenue Mark, Tops Football Money League

Real Madrid has become the first football club to surpass a billion euros in revenue in a single season, largely due to the income generated by the revamped Santiago Bernabeu stadium, according to financial analysts at Deloitte.

In Deloitte’s annual Football Money League, Real Madrid leads with €1.05 billion ($1.09 billion) in revenue, followed by Premier League champions Manchester City (€838 million) and Paris Saint-Germain (€806 million). The €208 million gap between first and second place is the largest ever recorded by Deloitte.

The extensive renovation of the Bernabeu doubled matchday revenue to €248 million during the 2023/24 season. Since 2018, Madrid has taken out over €1 billion in loans to transform the stadium into a significant revenue-generating asset. The modernized venue now features an undulating metal roof, expanded VIP areas, shops, and a retractable pitch.

High-profile events, including a Taylor Swift concert and the NFL’s upcoming first game in Spain, have added to the Bernabeu's appeal. However, the club has faced complaints from local residents about noise pollution, leading to a temporary suspension of concerts at the venue.

“Club stadia are increasingly being valued as more than just matchday assets, with many clubs turning their grounds into multi-purpose entertainment hubs that attract new visitors, sponsors, and retail opportunities,” said Tim Bridge, lead partner in the Deloitte Sports Business Group. He noted that football clubs are evolving beyond their traditional sporting roles to integrate media and entertainment into their commercial strategies.

While matchday revenue rose by 11%, commercial revenue remained the largest income source for the top 20 clubs, accounting for 44% of their total revenue. Broadcast revenue remained steady at €4.3 billion, as the "Big Five" leagues (England, Spain, Italy, France, and Germany) stayed within the same domestic broadcast cycles as the previous season.

English clubs continued to dominate the Money League, driven by the Premier League's lucrative television deals. Six of the top 10 clubs and nine of the top 20 are from England.

Manchester United climbed to fourth place (€771 million), buoyed by their return to the Champions League, ahead of Bayern Munich (€765 million). Barcelona dropped to sixth as renovation work at the Camp Nou forced them to relocate to the smaller Montjuic Stadium, which hosted the 1992 Olympics.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Chelsea completed the top 10, despite the latter three missing out on Champions League football last season.
