Man Electrocuted While Attempting to Vandalize Transformer in Akute Ogun State

An unidentified man lost his life after being electrocuted while attempting to vandalize a transformer in the Akute area of Ogun State.

Reports indicate that the community has been grappling with ongoing theft and damage to electrical wires connected to their power transformer.

The spokesman for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday. She explained that the man had climbed into the transformer enclosure to cut a wire, an act that tragically resulted in his electrocution.

The incident was initially reported to the police by Rasheed Ajagbe, chairman of the Irewole community. According to the statement:

“At about 10:20 am on Friday, Rasheed Ajagbe informed the police that the Irewole community had been dealing with persistent theft and damage of electrical wires from their power transformer.
Around 7 am, he received a call urging him to inspect the transformer. Upon arriving with other community executives, they discovered the lifeless body of an unidentified individual who had apparently attempted to vandalize the transformer and was electrocuted in the process.”

Police detectives promptly visited the scene to conduct an investigation and document evidence with photographs. The Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) office was also notified, and the deceased’s body was transported to the General Hospital Ifo mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

However, there was a twist to the story on Saturday. According to reports, the officials who had taken the body earlier returned it. Observers noted that the corpse appeared swollen and blistered due to improper handling. After some time, the officials removed the body once more, but the situation raised concerns over the management of the deceased.

This incident underscores the dangers of tampering with electrical infrastructure and highlights the challenges communities face in protecting vital public utilities from vandalism.

Two Dead, Four Injured in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Accidents

Two fatal crashes on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway claimed the lives of two people and left four others injured in separate incidents on Friday. The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the tragic events, which occurred on the Long Bridge and the Sagamu corridor of the highway.

The first accident involved a Volkswagen bus with registration number LSR 793 YF, carrying 14 passengers en route to Ibadan. According to the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the bus suffered a front tyre burst on the Long Bridge, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle veered off course, collided with the road median, and somersaulted multiple times.

An unidentified female passenger died at the scene, while four others—three women and one man—sustained varying injuries. They were rushed to A-Z Private Hospital in Magboro for treatment.

Odutola stated, “Traffic personnel from the Motor Traffic Division (MTD) responded quickly, documenting the scene and clearing the wreckage to avoid further obstruction. The deceased’s body was taken to the Real Divine Mortuary in Ibafo for an autopsy.”

In a separate incident near the En-Salam Filling Station on the Sagamu corridor, a collision between a Volvo truck (FZE 2350 G) and a Cabstar pickup van (AGL 904 AP) resulted in the death of a 42-year-old passenger, Saka Alaigbade.

The Cabstar, driven by Tope Kolawole from Owode-Egba, Ogun State, reportedly rammed into the rear of the Volvo truck while both vehicles were heading toward Ibadan. The impact left the pickup van severely mangled, trapping Saka in the wreckage.

Emergency responders and concerned bystanders managed to free him and rushed him to Idera Private Hospital. Unfortunately, the injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Odutola added, “The victim’s family later collected his remains in an emotional handover. The wrecked pickup van now stands as a somber reminder of the devastating collision.”

Both vehicles involved in the Sagamu accident were moved to the Sagamu MTD Police Office for further investigation and inspection by the Vehicle Inspection Office.

These tragic incidents serve as a stark reminder of the need for heightened safety measures and vigilance on the highways.
