January 27, 2025 Marketers May Abandon Dangote Fuel as Imported Petrol Hits ₦922/Litre

Marketers May Abandon Dangote Fuel as Imported Petrol Hits ₦922/Litre

Oil marketers have disclosed that as of Friday, the landing cost of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) was ₦922.65 per litre. This figure accounts for various expenses such as shipping, import duties, and exchange rates. The cost reflects a reduction of ₦32.35 compared to the ₦955 per litre offered at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s loading gantry.

This drop in landing costs is expected to influence retail prices and might encourage marketers to resume petrol imports. A prominent marketer, speaking anonymously, noted that the reduced cost of imported petrol often incentivizes dealers, making the importation route more appealing.

Last week, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery cited rising crude oil prices as the reason for the earlier increase in petrol prices from ₦899.50. However, the recent decline in landing costs offers some respite from global market and supply chain pressures.

Despite the reduction, retail petrol prices remain high in Nigeria, with major marketers selling between ₦990 and ₦1,010 per litre in the Federal Capital Territory. Data from the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria revealed that the on-spot import parity estimate for tanks was ₦922.65 per litre on Friday, down by 2.2% from the ₦943.75 recorded on Thursday. However, the average 30-day cost rose to ₦939.52 per litre, reflecting ongoing exchange rate and freight cost challenges.

Further analysis of depot petrol prices last week showed a reduction of ₦10 in loading costs. Nipco adjusted its price to ₦970 from ₦965 per litre earlier in the week, while Aiteo and Sahara closed at ₦960 per litre. Depots in Port Harcourt, Delta, and Calabar maintained prices ranging from ₦972 to ₦990 per litre.

Between January 21 and 22, 2025, oil marketers imported approximately 76.84 million litres of petrol, according to Nigerian Port Authority data. Vessels carrying 57,301 metric tonnes of fuel berthed at Apapa, Tincan, and Dangote terminals in Lagos.

The National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Billy Gillis-Harry, expressed surprise at the imports, highlighting an industry agreement to suspend imports for 180 days to allow the Dangote Refinery to demonstrate its production capacity. However, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) clarified that the directive was more of a mutual understanding than a binding agreement. IPMAN’s National Publicity Secretary, Chinedu Ukadike, emphasized that marketers are prioritizing cost-efficiency, and the current focus remains on sourcing the most affordable products.

₦1.3bn Fraud: Police to Arraign Obanikoro’s Son, Others on February 27

The Federal High Court in Lagos has scheduled February 27, 2025, for the arraignment of Gbolahan Obanikoro, son of Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, alongside four others, over allegations of a ₦1.35 billion fraud.

The other defendants in the case include Adejare Adegbenro, aged 51; Balmoral International Limited; M.O.B. Integrated Limited; and DDSS International Company Limited. They face five charges, including conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretenses, false representation, and fraud.

Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa set the new date after the defendants failed to appear for their scheduled arraignment on Friday. During the proceedings, the prosecution counsel, Momoh Bello, informed the court that the case was listed for the defendants' arraignment. However, due to their absence, Bello requested a bench warrant to force their appearance, claiming that all the defendants had been duly served.

Counsel for the fourth defendant (M.O.B. Integrated Limited), Joshua Abel, opposed the request, explaining that his client had received the court summons late on Wednesday and was only informed of the case on Thursday. He also noted that some of the company's directors were currently outside the country.

Justice Lewis-Allagoa reviewed the service records and pointed out that while the third and fourth defendants had been served, there was no proof of service for the first and second defendants, who are natural persons.

“The record of this court shows that service was effected on the third and fourth defendants, but it’s less than 48 hours since they were served. One was served as recently as yesterday. There is no proof that the first and second defendants have been served. The law requires personal service,” the judge ruled.

The judge directed the prosecution to regularize the service process for all defendants and adjourned the matter to February 27, 2025, for arraignment.

The Inspector General of Police, through the Special Fraud Unit in Ikoyi, Lagos, accused the defendants of conspiring between May and September 2013 to fraudulently obtain ₦1.35 billion from Access Bank Plc (formerly Diamond Bank).

The defendants allegedly misrepresented themselves to the bank, claiming they were engaged in importing vehicles from Dubai for sale in Nigeria. They purportedly stated that the funds were required to finance the importation of brand-new cars for resale.

The police further allege that the defendants unlawfully converted ₦1 billion of the bank’s funds for personal use, knowing or having reason to know the money was proceeds of unlawful activity.

The charges against them include violations of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud-Related Offenses Act, 2006, and the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. If found guilty, the defendants face severe legal penalties.

Afe Babalola Drops Lawsuits Against Farotimi Following Ooni and Monarchs’ Mediation

The Founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola SAN, announced on Monday his decision to withdraw legal cases filed against activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi. This decision followed a midnight intervention by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other prominent Yoruba monarchs.

The legal dispute began when Babalola filed a petition to the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, alleging that Farotimi defamed him in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. The activist was subsequently arrested and charged with criminal defamation and cyberbullying in two separate courts in Ado Ekiti.

Speaking at Afe Babalola University, Babalola explained that the Ooni and other traditional rulers had appealed to him to withdraw the cases. He stated, “The monarchs are here; they have appealed to me over a criminal charge involving someone who accused me of corruption. I will tell my lawyers to withdraw the case.”

The meeting was attended by key Yoruba traditional rulers, including the Chairman of the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Olojudo of Ido Ekiti, Oba Ayorinde Ilori-Faboro; the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe; the Ajero of Ijero Ekiti, Oba Joseph Adewole; the Ogoga of Ikere Ekiti, Oba Adejimi Adu; the Oloye of Oye Ekiti, Oba Michael Ademolaju; and the Alaaye of Efon Ekiti, Oba Emmanuel Aladejare.

Babalola expressed his initial reluctance to drop the charges, noting that several prominent figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Bishop Mathew Kukah, had previously appealed to him without success. However, he emphasized the respect he holds for the Yoruba traditional institution, stating, “There is nothing I am going to gain from his imprisonment or damages. My joy comes from giving and contributing to society.”

The Ooni of Ife, speaking on behalf of the monarchs, assured Babalola that his reputation remains untarnished, saying, “Your name is more valuable than silver and gold. Nobody can tarnish your legacy.”

Oba Ogunwusi praised Babalola’s contributions to the development of the Yoruba race, Nigeria, and the world at large, adding, “We, the monarchs, came together to appeal to you as elders of the Yoruba race. Dele Farotimi is like a son to you, and we ask for your forgiveness. Your name is intact, and we have resolved this matter in our traditional way.”

The allegations against Farotimi stemmed from claims in his book accusing Babalola and other Senior Advocates of Nigeria of influencing Supreme Court justices through corrupt practices. Farotimi was arrested in Lagos by the Ekiti State Police Command and faced a 16-count charge of criminal defamation and cyberbullying in Ado Ekiti.

With this resolution, Babalola has directed his lawyers to withdraw all charges, marking an end to the legal dispute after a collaborative effort by Yoruba monarchs to mediate peace.

Arsenal Receive Major Alexander Isak Transfer Update as Arteta Awaits Kroenke’s Decision

Arsenal’s hopes of signing Alexander Isak have taken a hit as Newcastle United prepare to offer the striker a new long-term contract. The 25-year-old Sweden international has been in exceptional form this season, scoring 16 goals and providing four assists in 16 Premier League appearances since returning from injury.

Isak has been instrumental in Newcastle’s rise to fifth place under Eddie Howe, making him a key figure in the Magpies’ plans. According to The Telegraph, Newcastle are determined to keep Isak and are reportedly unwilling to sell him at any price. The club plans to reward his performances with a bumper new deal in the summer.

Arsenal, who have been tracking Isak for some time, would need significant financial backing to launch a bid. However, Isak himself has expressed his happiness at Newcastle, calling it “extra special” to play for the club. Speaking to Swedish media, he emphasized his focus on helping Newcastle achieve their goals this season and dismissed rumors of a potential move.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has also made it clear he wants Isak to stay, despite the club needing to comply with strict financial regulations. Howe said, “Alex has a long contract, and we’re desperate for him to stay and continue scoring goals for us. For now, he just needs to focus on his football.”

With Newcastle determined to keep their star striker, Arsenal may have to look elsewhere to strengthen their frontline.
